Pedicures and Peace of Mind: A Black Girl’s Self-Care Moment

A beautiful flatlay: nail polish bottles, lotion, towel, cozy spa elements
Celebrating self-care and empowerment, and promoting peace of mind.

Now and then, I need a little pick-me-up—not the kind that comes in a cup, but the kind that gently nudges your spirit back into action. This week, after two endless days wrestling with spreadsheets, I came to a realization: I desperately needed a reset. My toes were in desperate need of attention, spring was practically waving at me, and honestly... I just wanted a moment of peace, preferably a peaceful moment without looking at any more numbers!

Now, I usually only get a pedicure every two months. Why? Because I swear every time that I’m not spending money on my feet. I do my nails (and they look good!), and if I could master the art of doing my pedicure, I would. I even tried to learn during the COVID-19 pandemic, but that didn’t last long. It just wasn’t relaxing—and let’s be real, I suck at massaging my legs and feet. Hahaha.

From the moment I walked in, the manager was warm and personable. We chatted about how the salon is somewhat hidden (it doesn't have a big sign outside) and how she took it over during the pandemic. She even offered me water, soda, or wine—which I passed on—but it was such a nice gesture. The nail tech who did my pedicure was sweet, the massage was everything, and my toes? Perfect.

What stood out the most, though, was the atmosphere. It felt calm, cozy, and professional. Everyone spoke clearly, so there was no awkward guessing game during conversations. And there was no pressure to tip, which, as a Black woman, I’ve felt at some salons. That uncomfortable vibe like we must tip or we’ll be judged. I always tip when I can, but sometimes I’ve had to skip it—either because the establishment doesn’t accept credit card tips, I didn’t have cash, or the service just wasn’t up to par. But here, I didn’t feel that pressure. It was a judgment-free zone.

Walking out with freshly polished toes, soft skin, and a relaxed mind was a solid reminder that these little pleasures matter. A pedicure isn’t just a treat; it’s more like hitting the reset button on life! It’s a tiny act of self-care that sends a huge message: you absolutely deserve to feel good. So go ahead, book that appointment—you know your toes are ready to shine!
